Common questions

Do I need drawings to get a building permit in Ontario?

For most structural work, yes. Ontario municipalities require drawings that show the existing conditions and the proposed work, and structural changes generally need drawings prepared or reviewed by a qualified designer or engineer. The exact set depends on your municipality and the scope of the job.

What is the difference between blueprints and engineering drawings?

Blueprints describe layout and dimensions — what goes where. Engineering drawings describe how the structure carries load, and are what a plans examiner looks for when you remove or alter something structural. Many projects need both.

How long does it take to get drawings done?

It depends on whether measured drawings of the existing building already exist, and whether an engineer needs to be involved. Site measurement is usually the first step, and permit review at the municipality is a separate wait on top of drawing time.

Can you work from drawings I already have?

Yes. Existing drawings can be reviewed, updated or extended rather than redrawn from scratch, provided they reflect the building as it stands today.
