Why does my basement flood every spring?

What is a French drain and when do I need one?
A gravel-filled trench with a perforated pipe that collects water and carries it away from the building. It is the usual answer when water pools against a foundation or sits in a low part of the yard that will not dry out on its own.
Where should downspouts and drains discharge?
Well away from the foundation, to a spot where the water can move off rather than soak back down against the wall. Extending downspouts and correcting the grade around the house is often the cheapest and most effective part of a drainage fix.
