Common questions
How much watering does new sod need?
A lot, and consistently, for the first couple of weeks — new sod has to be kept moist while the roots knit into the soil below, or it dries out and lifts. Watering tapers off once it has rooted, but the early period is where most new sod is won or lost.
Do you prepare the soil before laying sod?
Yes — sod laid straight onto compacted or poor soil struggles to root. The ground is graded and the soil prepared first so water drains away from the house and the roots have something to grow into, which is what separates sod that takes from sod that fails.
How soon can we walk on new sod?
Keep traffic off it while it roots — usually a couple of weeks — because footsteps disturb the contact between the sod and the soil it is trying to bond with. Once it has knit down and resists a gentle tug, normal use can resume.
